I have had a soft spot for the Muppets most of my life. It is kind of odd to include those memories with my Disney memories, for in my past they were not connected brands or characters. But thanks to Disney's business dealings in the 1990s and later acquisition of The Muppets in 2004, my more recent Muppet memories are tied to Disney. So in what will be a long post, here is a compilation of my Muppet love as told through scrapbook pages. Let's begin in the 1970s....

the muppet show

Watching The Muppet Show was a regular event in my house when I was a little girl. It would come on for a half hour time slot, usually at 7:30 or 8:00 pm. Julie and I would be in our pajamas, and Dad would join us as we settled into the living room in front of the t.v. I remember Dad laughing at all the gags, and he loved the guest stars. The episode that stands out the most for me was Elton John performing “Crocodile Rock” - his costume was mesmerizing, and the swamp setting with the crocs…perfect. I also loved Pigs in Space, the Swedish Chef, and Beaker with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. Kermit was (and still is) hands down my favorite Muppet. Great memories.

Because there are no "everyday photos" of us watching t.v. when I was growing up (not surprising), I had no photographic record of this favoite memory of mine. This is where journaling comes in to play and some clip art I found online. I also took a screen capture (screen shot) of the intro to the show from a DVD I was using on my computer. In addition to the Muppet references, I remember having a View-Master when I was a kid, so when I saw a reel as a digital element in Sahlin Studio's digi kit, I wanted to include it on this page. I think it adds a little touch of that retro seventies vibe.

kermit the frog

My Kermit has been around for a long time. He was unique because he had velcro on his, um, appendages, to help him hold onto things, or when he wanted to give himself a big hug. His eyes were truly like ping pong balls, and he always had a smile. He fit right in with my collection of dolls, plush animals and pretend friends. He has held up quite well over the years. By the time I started having my own kids, he was there in the nursery, literally hanging onto the corner of the rocking chair. He embodies a genuine quality that is not always easy to find in others.  What you see is what you get with Kermit. I am so glad to still have him around after almost 40 years.

I did a little photoshoot with Kermit and tried lots of angles with plenty of natural light. I was happy with how they turned out. I highly recommend doing this with special items, toys, collectibles, antiques, etc. The old photo I used has nothing to do with Disney, but we always laughed at this image because I barely had room enough for me to sleep thanks to all the friends I had tucked in bed. I scanned and saved the photo to my computer, then edited it in PicMonkey. It was easy adding text and graphics to better illustrate the significance of the photo.

the muppet movie - rainbow connection

I remember seeing The Muppet Movie (1979) at the movies. I loved the soundtrack, and I would play it on my Fisher-Price record player. A lot. And I would study the pictures that adorned the album cover and inside spread. All of this offered an amazing look at the Muppets. They weren’t in their familiar theater, but were out in the real world. How that happened grabbed hold of my imagination.  Kermit singing Rainbow Connection and Gonzo’s wistful tune struck a nerve with my sensitive side. And it was this movie that solidified Animal’s free spirit and oftentimes crazed personality. Such a fun record to have as a kid.

It just so happens that my mom had saved this record of mine, and I brought it home recently as my nostalgia for my childhood grows. I took pictures of both the album and the album cover. Each stirs up some strong memories, and I made sure to write those memories down. The Kermit graphic in the center of the page evolved as I went along. I used chalks to color the image which was originally on a 4x4 white matte presentation paper. I felt like it was too much white on the entire page, and I really liked the green glittered paper I had in my stash, so I carefully cut out Kermit with scissors, and adhered him to white cardstock using foam tape for dimension. Because I love some sparkle, I added a bit of lime green glitter to Kermit's collar.

muppet*vision 3D

Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World has an attraction featuring the Muppets – Muppet*Vision 3D. It is a very Muppet-y experience, with plenty of the trademark fur, quips, and quirks that we have come to expect from this large cast of characters. I experienced it for the first time with my family and parents in 2011. It was great seeing it with my mom and dad, since they would have watched the original Muppet Show with me as a kid. We managed to snap a pic of Henry wearing the 3D glasses you use during the film. The fountain featuring Miss Piggy outside in the courtyard is a riot, too. Can’t wait to watch this show again on my next visit!

My memory of seeing this attraction includes a late afternoon with tired, cranky kids and a group of people ready for some air conditioning and food. I was not interested in taking photos at the time, and so we have very few pictures from this attraction - I think these pictures are a combination of my husband and my mom's efforts. It's a shame because there are some fun photo ops in this location. Noted for next time! I used digital elements to perk up the photos and to help tell the story. Fozzie Bear's classic lines were included on a filler card I created, placed next to a downloaded image of the character from Muppets Most Wanted promotional materials.

the muppets - 2014

started an Instagram account – YES!
starred in a sequel to their 2011 movie,  The Muppets
had new music, cameo appearances, and mayhem in Muppets Most Wanted
I took Oscar, Elizabeth, and Henry to see the movie during Spring Break week
favorite cameo: Usher as a wedding usher – awesome!
I learned how to draw Beaker

I decided to use a list format for some journaling with this page. Staples helped adhere loose ephemera to the cards, and I cut out the digital heart and added it with foam tape. The postcard download was a very easy filler as it is almost exactly 4x6, and I just printed it on photo paper at home. Beaker is sketched by me, by following the instructions from another promotional download for the movie. See my process in this post.
