To celebrate spring and for those who enjoy the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, I created a story for my album that focuses on the greener side of Disney. Keep reading to see how I documented my assortment of photos, including ideas for customizing elements and journal cards for layouts. As Alice and the Flowers of Wonderland said, "You can learn a lot of things from the flowers...."

story concept

When you look though your collection of Disney photos, do you find a random assortment of garden-themed and floral images?
Do you have memories and/or photos that were taken at Epcot's International Flower & Garden Fesitval?

I have a variety of experiences with Disney theme parks, most of which are haphazardly documented with small sets of photos. It wasn't until I was older with my own kids - and armed with digital and phone cameras - that I amassed much larger sets of vacation photos. As I have been going through all of these photos, I found that I had random pictures of flowers and topiaries mixed in among the character, attraction, food, and iconic photos that most of us faithfully take on our visits to the parks. In fact, I found it kind of funny that for one of my solo trips to WDW in 2013, the only photo I took on the day I spent in Epcot was of the Captain Hook topiary in Great Britain.

Huh?? (I guess I was too busy sipping on my Grand Marinier Orange Slush from that kiosk in France....)

Tip: Sign and date your journaling, especially if you are recalling memories
from years past. I almost always add my initials and the month and year of my
written thoughts. It helps provide some memory context for the reader.

Even though the pink flowers in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle don't match
the reds, oranges, and yellows of the other images in this layout, I used it
anyway. It was the only photo I was using from that trip, and I had an open
4x6 spot on this page. Works for me!

I did better with the photography during a March visit in 2010, when we happened to be in Epcot during the International Flower & Garden Festival. While we did not spend any significant amount of time taking in all of the offerings of the festival, we were captivated by the beautiful topiaries we kept seeing, especially the ones depicting The Lion King characters. And as all guests know, there is an abundance of floral displays, gardens, and topiaries scattered throughout all Disney Resorts and Theme Parks.

I love The Lion King, "hakuna matata," and these characters - so I used a section of text that goes with
the illustration I used as a 4x6 insert, that in turn goes with the photo I have of Timon holding a serving
of bugs. I used double-sided foam tape to raise the text slightly off the page for dimension.

Simply stated, this is my favorite picture of the topiaries and one of my favorite
moments from Disney films. So I gave it a special place as an enlarged photo in a
vertical 5x7 protector (Project Life by Becky Higgins).
Perhaps you have intentionally photographed the flowers you see while on vacation, or perhaps you went to Epcot in the spring just to experience the festival displays and events. Pulling all of these images together for a scrapbook layout, a series of layouts (like I did), a small photobook, or a collage of images for a single print is a great way to document your appreciation for Disney's attention to detail and green thumb artistry. If you are a gardener, a florist, or someone who loves landscaping and yard art, then you are likely drawn to these elements in the parks anyway. For future visits, don't hesitate to take photos of these details. It will force you to literally slow down and stop to smell the roses.

I noticed with my assorted floral and garden photos that I am drawn to the topiaries. On at least six different vacations, I had at least one photo of a topiary. I am not surprised since I am in awe of how someone can take shrubbery and create a very real replica of my favorite Disney characters. For my next trip to the parks, I will be keeping an eye out for more of these. And I really need a pic of the Peter Pan topiary to go with my Captain Hook....

I really liked the idea of using this section of text as a patterned paper because
it contains words like birds and butterflies. Even though I did not have pictures
of any Bambi related gardens, I love the illustrations from that story and its
sweet characters. And I share my own observation about myself on the tag.

resources

Floral, gardening, nature, butterflies, and spring-related memory keeping supplies can be used to document and embellish your pages about Disney gardens and topiaries. If you have a supply stash, look there first for papers and embellishments. For this story, the only thing I purchased was the Ali Edwards Designs Spring and Easter Boxes 4x6 Brushes and Stamps - everything else I had on hand or I printed at home using downloaded images. I will have a bonus post on April 3 that presents Project Life / pocket card samples, including some not used in the pages shown here and the links for sources.
